Chemical Brightening (Sub Sulphuric)

Chemical brightening is a process used to enhance the surface appearance of metals, primarily Aluminium, by removing surface imperfections and creating a shiny, mirror-like finish. Unlike mechanical polishing, which uses abrasive materials to polish the surface, chemical brightening relies on chemical reactions to smooth out the surface and impart a glossy finish. The process is commonly used in conjunction with anodising and is especially prevalent in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries.

Detailed Process of Chemical Brightening:

  • Surface Preparation and Cleaning: Before chemical brightening, the metal surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, oils, grease and previous coatings to ensure the chemicals work effectively. The metal then undergoes acid cleaning using solutions such as nitric or sulfuric acid to remove oxidation layers, scale and contaminants. Finally, the part is rinsed with water to eliminate any residual chemicals before brightening.

  • Brightening Solution: The brightening solution contains combinations of acids including nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid or mixed acid formulas depending on the required finish. Hydrofluoric acid removes the aluminium oxide layer and surface contamination. The concentration and temperature of the bath, normally 60°C to 90°C, determine the level of brightness achieved.

  • Chemical Brightening Reaction: The process removes aluminium oxide and contaminants by chemically etching the surface. This etching creates a pickling effect that eliminates imperfections and microcracks, producing a smooth, microcrystalline and reflective surface without mechanical abrasion.

  • Brightening Effect: As the reaction progresses, the metal becomes increasingly shiny and reflective, achieving a mirror-like finish due to reduced roughness and oxide removal. The result is a high-lustre surface suitable for architectural panels, decorative trim and premium consumer products.

  • Post-Treatment: After brightening, the metal is thoroughly rinsed to remove acid residues. A neutralising solution may be applied to stop chemical activity. Aluminium parts are often sealed, especially before anodising, using boiling water or specialised chemical baths to lock in brightness and prevent oxidation.

  • Inspection and Finishing: The final surface is inspected for brightness and uniformity. Any imperfections may require additional chemical treatment. Light polishing may also be applied to further enhance lustre.

Chemical brightening is commonly used on Aluminium and Aluminium alloys to achieve a bright, shiny finish, especially in industries where aesthetics and corrosion resistance are important, such as automotive, aerospace and consumer electronics. It can also be used on stainless steel to remove oxidation and achieve a polished surface. Additionally, it is widely used in decorative applications such as jewellery, trim and architectural components.

Chemical brightening offers uniformity and can produce a more consistent finish than mechanical polishing, particularly for complex shapes or intricate parts. It is time and labour efficient, as it is faster than mechanical polishing and can process multiple parts at once in a bath. The process results in a shiny, reflective surface that is visually appealing and can be customised for specific aesthetic effects. By removing oxides and creating a smooth surface, chemical brightening can also improve the corrosion resistance of the metal, especially when combined with anodising.

Disadvantages of Chemical Brightening:

The process involves hazardous chemicals such as acids, which must be handled carefully and disposed of properly. The acid may slightly alter the dimensions of the part due to surface etching, which must be taken into account for applications requiring tight tolerances.
