How Electroless Nickel Plating Works

Surface Preparation: Before the process begins, the workpiece is thoroughly cleaned to remove oils, dirt, oxidation, and contaminants. Common methods include ultrasonic cleaning, acid cleaning, or abrasive blasting. After cleaning, the part may undergo an activation process to promote the chemical reaction that allows nickel to adhere to the surface.

The Plating Process: The workpiece is immersed in a bath containing a nickel salt solution, typically nickel sulphate or nickel chloride, along with chemical agents such as reducing agents (usually sodium hypophosphite). When immersed, the reducing agents chemically reduce the nickel ions from the solution and deposit them as metallic nickel onto the substrate’s surface. The process occurs uniformly across the entire part, including recessed or complex areas. This ensures an even coating, unlike electroplating which often produces variable thickness.

Post Plating: After plating, the part is rinsed, dried, and usually heat treated (baked) to improve the hardness and stability of the coating. Depending on the application, the part may also undergo polishing or additional finishing steps.
