Sulphuric Acid Anodising

Anodising is an electrochemical process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts, typically aluminium. This process enhances corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and provides a surface for colouring.

anodising process:

  • Cleaning and Preparation: The metal is initially cleaned to remove dirt, oils, and grease using alkaline or solvent cleaners. It is then etched with a caustic solution to remove oxide or scale and create a uniform finish, followed by desmutting to eliminate any residues that could interfere with anodising.

  • Electrolytic Anodising: The cleaned part is submerged in a sulphuric acid electrolyte bath, where a DC current is applied with the part as the anode. Oxygen ions react with the metal surface to grow a controlled oxide layer, with thickness determined by voltage, temperature, and time.

  • Thickness Control: Oxide layer thickness typically ranges from 5 to 25 microns depending on current density, bath temperature, and processing time, with higher voltage and longer durations producing thicker layers.

  • Sealing the Oxide Layer: After anodising, the porous oxide layer is sealed using boiling water or specialised sealing solutions such as nickel acetate, closing the pores to significantly enhance durability and corrosion resistance.

  • Colouring (Optional): The porous oxide layer can be dyed in a range of colours or coloured electrolytically using metal salts. Once sealed, the colour becomes highly durable, fade-resistant, and long-lasting.

  • Post-Anodising: Parts may be polished, brushed, or satin-finished to achieve the desired appearance, followed by thorough inspection to ensure coating thickness, colour consistency, and sealing quality meet required standards.

Benefits of Anodising:

  • Benefits: Provides superior durability, corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, and extensive aesthetic customisation with long-lasting colour options.
